Many Hands Make Light Work of Hidden Creek Trophy Wine

Hidden Creek is delighted to have won the main trophy at the 2009 Courier-Mail/Mercure Queensland Wine Awards judged on 4 October and announced at the awards dinner on 10 October. The 2008 Shiraz won both the trophy for Best Queensland Red and also the Champion Wine of the Show. The latter was decided by a vote of all the judges after they tried a panel of finalist wines that included Verdelho, Viognier, Chardonnay and other reds from a range of producers.

Chair of Judges, Stephen John commented “this is a sophisticated cool climate spicy Shiraz style that is up there with the best of other cool climate renowned regions such as Victoria and South Australia”. Winemaker Jim Barnes commented “as usual the result was due to a lot of hard work. The interesting aspect of this wine is that it was made from grapes harvested by hand by volunteers who are on our mailing list. We have an annual harvest picnic and for the 2008 vintage the group did a great job of picking the grapes for this wine”.

Hidden Creek also did well with a silver medal for Verdelho 2009 and bronze medals for its Girraween 2008 (a cabernet, merlot, petit verdot blend) and 2008 Tempranillo.

Hidden Creek Winery and Cafe is situated in Ballandean , backing onto the beautiful Girraween National Park about 15 minutes drive south of Stanthorpe. The cellar door cafe is open from Friday to Monday. In Brisbane the wines are available at a number of outlets and restaurants. The notable retail outlet is The Wine Experience, Baroona Rd, Rosalie.
